Happiness is like time and space--we make and measure it ourselves; it is a fancy--as big, as little, as you please; just a thing of contrasts and comparisons, like health or strength or beauty or any other good--that wouldn't even be noticed but for sad personal experience of its opposite! --or its greater! About This Quote

The poet, Vachel Lindsay, wrote in his poem, “Happiness is like time and space--we make and measure it ourselves; it is a fancy--as big, as little, as you please; just a thing of contrasts and comparisons, like health or strength or beauty or any other good--that wouldn't even be noticed but for sad personal experience of its opposite!--or its greater!” I think that this quote can be taken in many different directions. For instance, I think that when someone says “happiness is like time and space” they are saying that happiness is like an intangible feeling. It is something that people make up their own minds about. Someone could say that they are happier than they used to be because they feel like the world is more beautiful than it used to be.

Or, someone could say that things seem more difficult than they used to be because life has become harder for them. However, if someone says that life seems easier than it used to be then this person probably has no idea how hard life really can be.
